Mccarthy's Rhetorical Analysis

Improved Essays
Dear Colleagues: For writing project 1, we did not argue about whether McCarthy’s strategy was effective, we assumed it was effective and instead argued about which rhetorical elements, we believed were crucial to the understanding of his strategy. I argued that his introduction, his use of the three appeals (specifically ethos), and his diction were most crucial in the success of his strategy. I believe my essay has many strengths, and these include my organization and the structure of my paper. I also think my claims, and the support I offer for them are very effective and compelling. These compelling and effective claims, I believe are where my paper truly shines, and these claims also highlight the most effective piece of my …show more content…
My most effective piece of writing is where I am arguing for McCarthy’s use of ethos. I think this is the essential element of his strategy and the most interesting part of my paper. I would not have been able to write such compelling and interesting arguments if I did not draft and revise my

Throughout the year, I have encountered challenges when writing scene analyses. At the beginning of the year, I frequently overlooked details or I failed to thoroughly analyze a passage. In my analysis of Scott Russell Sanders’s essay “Under the Influence,” I did not closely analyze the text and I repeatedly cited long quotes without any in-depth analysis. In my paragraphs analyzing this text, I mostly summarized the meaning of the text and I failed to demonstrate the importance of the lines that I cited. As the year progressed, I met with KP several times so that I would understand how I could improve my analyses.…

    1. I feel more comfortable summarizing now than I have ever before. The main reason it isn’t as daunting is because my professor utilized an exercise for summarization. For example, he asked us to summarize a movie in one sentence. By doing this exercise, it drilled the basics of what a summary needs to be about, which, is key information.…

The artifacts that I have included are all reflective of my unit 4 writing assignment progression. I decided to revise my unit 4 writing assignment "The Legacy of Agent Orange" because it has been difficult for me. Initially I failed to completely understand the objective of the assignment and as a result I submitted a paper that failed to argue a misperceived facet of American culture. Furthermore, I felt the urge to rewrite the paper so that it further reflected my development as a writer because I feel that I have made significant improvements to my overall understanding of writing throughout the duration of this course. The artifacts included detail the initial confusion, identifying the issue, and finally developing a course of action…

Essay writers generally approach a piece of writing with a persuasive purpose in mind. The goal of a persuasive essay is to convince readers to believe, or at least consider, some proposition that the writer has developed throughout the piece. To accomplish that task writers have at their disposal two fundamental tools—they can use narrative, which is purposeful storytelling, or they can use exposition, which is a detailed explanation of an idea, theory, or finding. Studying how both narrative and exposition are employed in an essay yields deep insight into how writers (a) ultimately develop their claims and (b) suggest new ways of understanding issues and problems. In “Hellhole,” Atul Gawande, a writer for The New Yorker, explores the effects…

This simple fact makes the reader stop, and really consider his actions. The reader was just compared to nations that have had wars declared on them. This leads to thoughts about Nazi Germany, and how they burned books during the Holocaust. McCarthy thought that he was doing the right thing, but this makes him step back and realize that was he did was…

Through IN151, I have seen that my writing has improved tremendously. From IN150, Dr. O’Conner hammered into his students’ heads that argumentative pieces of writing should include the author’s own voice and opinion in them, and with this, I was given the opportunity to put my own opinion in a piece of writing through taking IN151. During this semester, my peers and I went through extensive research to draft up an essay on a particular controversial issue. If anyone has ever said that writing is hard, they probably did not have to brainstorm of a topic to write on. In my opinion, this is the hardest part of any piece of writing.…

I knew the basics of writing, but not the dynamics. I could write a wonderful essay, but it would lack emotion and true depth. Spelman helped to change my confidence and made me the writer I am today. Reflecting back on my senior year, I was hesitant to become an English major.…

This semester, I have learned a lot from this English 101 course. I have not only learned from you, but also from my peers and myself. Entering this class, I had a good understanding of what this course was about because I took a pre-English class over the summer. Although I feel it provided me with a decent grasp of the course, the material of pre-English was condensed into six weeks, so there was still a lot left to learn. English 101 was very beneficial because it helped strengthen my writing as it also gave me an introduction to college writing.…

Taking a Look Back “What exactly is your controlling purpose?” I got asked this question so many times by my peers, my instructor, and even the tutors at the writing center to the point where it got frustrating to try and explain. Then I realized, my controlling purposes for all three of my interpretive essays were vague and confusing for my audience to understand. Because of my controlling purposes being confusing, the rest of my paper subsequently wasn’t coherent for my audience.…

After nearly a semester of writing 101 at the University of Wisconsin-Superior, my writing has evolved throughout a serious of projects contained in this portfolio. These projects have improved my understanding of rhetorical situations and the elements of essays and nonfiction through active and critical reading. They have also required me to show attention to audience, purpose, genre, diction, tone, organization, and other aspects of the rhetorical context. In this reflection, I have included four discourses (a personal discourse, a public discourse, a professional discourse, and an academic discourse): a memoir, an event profile, an informational report, and a textual analysis. The three main aspects of my paper that I found myself struggling with was coming up with a clearly stated thematic message, explaining quotes without summarizing, and clear transitions. In addition to these corrections, it was essential that I corrected the multiple grammar mistakes that were made throughout the essay. When coming up with a new thematic message for the paper, I focused on creating a message that was reflected clearly in all of my paragraphs. My initial thematic statement was unclear and very vague.…
