McCarthyism was the practice of making accusations of disloyalty, especially of pro-communist activity, in many instances unsupported by proof or based on slight, doubtful or wrong information. In 1950, Republican Joseph McCarthy charged that communists had entered The U.S. State Department. On February 9, Senator Joseph McCarthy sent a telegram to President Truman two days after claiming the fact that he had found "205 card-carrying" members of the Communist party working in the U.S. State Department (“Victims of McCarthyism”). Joseph McCarthy he never actually had names and he kept constantly changing the number of known communists. According to The Washington Speech newspaper article of the speech, Joseph McCarthy stated that, he had a long list of “205 [State Department employees]” that the Secretary of State knew about being “members of the Communist Party” and who were “still working” in the State Department, (McCarthy). In the “The Speech at Wheeling” by Joseph McCarthy, he uses a convincing tone and repetition of the statement “religion of immoralism” in order to get people to understand what he is saying. When he repeats “religion of immoralism”, what he means is that it can hurt the economy and government and then that is where tone comes in.
