Mccarran Airport-Personal Narrative

As soon as I landed at McCarran airport, I couldn’t help but to smile. Home sweet, home. Once again I get to reunite with my loved ones. As I waited for my bags, I glanced around the corner and spotted some very familiar places. A world of things came into my mind. I turned around, noticed my bags, and loaded them up. I embarked on yet another journey in the restless jungle known as McCarran airport.

At the airport my nose is greeted by the aroma of freshly grilled chicken from Baja Fresh. In a moment’s notice my nose was swarmed by the smell of cinnabon. It was as if the baker just put the icing on 10 minutes ago. So many great choices to eat but after a whiff of wendy’s fries, my nose locked onto it’s target.

In the article “Why McDonalds Fries Taste So Good” by Eric Schlosser, he first deliberates on the evolution of McDonald’s fries, from being just another fry into becoming one of the most popular food commodities in the fast food industry. The article emphasizes on the similarities between natural and artificial flavors, which are both manmade, but contain chemicals that stimulate the perception of taste in people. He goes on to explain how many franchises and companies, like McDonalds, are trading their oils for flavors that are manufactured in factories and laboratories, which aid in the manipulation of peoples olfactory system. Eric Schlosser explains and educates the reader on the flavor industry, by giving a behind the scenes tour of what really happens behind closed doors when processing some of these foods. Have you ever tried to read the label on some of the foods you eat?…

My heart was racing, my eyes widening, and a smile growing across my face. Then, out of the corner of my eye I saw why I am so happy. A chain of islands, appearing out of nowhere in the large and gigantic dark blue ocean, popped into my view as I automatically flew towards them. The closer I got, the more I knew where I was headed. It was the one place that has captured my mind and…

For two weeks, I stayed in Charleston, South Carolina. I didn’t know much about the place, except that I referred to it as an army town because that’s where my sister and her husband, who was in the military, stayed. I was reluctant to go, but Charleston had a lot to offer me; a new change of pace and some new scenery was much more satisfying than spending the two weeks stuck in Iowa doing the same old routine. The weather was mystical in Charleston.…

Mini Critique #2: Atmospherics In recent decades, stores, malls, restaurants, and all kinds of businesses have learned to manipulate customers’ five senses by utilizing the techniques of atmospherics, in order to push customers to spend their money impulsively and emotionally; therefore, businesses can make more profit. According to what Douglas Rushkoff argues in his book, Coercion, the floor plan, temperature, lighting, sounds, smells, and other elements are all designed to create a “consuming atmosphere”; coercive atmospherics works in a way that does not acknowledge us as humans, but rather as brains with five senses. In order to connect this concept with my everyday life, I recalled my experience at one restaurant, Palisade, which utilizes the techniques of atmospherics thoroughly to increase their profit. Palisade is a fancy American restaurant that serves fresh seafood and high-quality steak in an…

Thomas P. Keenan’s novel, Technocreep, is a captivating work which aims to unravel the reader’s understanding of the world as they know it. The chapter Sensation Creep, delves into the methods used by companies to manipulate the senses and entice consumers to invest in products. Keenan paints society in a brand new light as he deconstructs the simplest aspects of everyday life and finds the ways in which we are unconsciously being influenced by companies. Looking particularly at the way scent is used in marketing, Keenan argues that increasingly sophisticated technologies allow companies to capitalize on revenue by using psychological manipulation to elicit a positive response from the human body. * Drawing on simple methods such as real estate…

My mother, brother and I arrive in the Atlantic City airport after a surprisingly short two hour flight. After dawdling away time by alternating between electronic games and magazine scavenger hunts, or sleeping (in my mother’s case), we were ready to see our timeshare hotel suite. Our destination a half hour away, we climbed into a traditional cab. Our driver provided unintended humor with his strong Jamaican accent. Mom made small talk, inquiring about the city: where to eat, what to do, etc.…

The Houston runway was quickly disappearing beneath me, the plane ascending, leaving my stomach dismantled on the tarmac. I couldn’t believe what was happening. I was truly on a plane, by myself, headed to Buenos Aires, Argentina. My mother laughed at the thought of me living abroad; consistently making it known my ideas were childish, financially unstable and unattainable. With a slight grin pulling at my lips, I close my eyes and begin to wonder what the world will look like on the other side of that airplane door.…

Fries taste good because fast food companies use artificial flavoring and beef tallow oils in their fries which ensures uniform taste, customer satisfaction, and competition. In the article "Why Fries Taste So Good," the author, Eric Schlosser, argues that the main factor in the success of the fast food industry is artificial flavoring and food coloring. He explains how chemical flavors created by flavorists give fast food its taste and smell, and explains the difference between artificial and natural flavors.
