Over the course of the last several months I have been in contact with Dr. Emilie Snell-Rood from the Evolution, Ecology, and Behavior (EEB) program. I am applying to the PhD program at the University of Minnesota because of the opportunity it offers understanding the impacts of human-induced changes on ecology. My goal of pursuing a graduate degree is something that I have been focused on throughout my undergraduate experience at Boise State University (BSU). A path to achieving this goal is reflected in my approach to education, including my dedication to the undergraduate courses I’ve enrolled in, and my participation in research with a number of faculty members in the department. Ultimately I would like to see my doctoral degree (and subsequent postdoctoral experience[s]) position me for a career in academia as a faculty member at a university that values both research and teaching.
As an undergraduate I am fortunate to have had a number of opportunities to participate in research, especially opportunities that tie into my interests. In the past several years, I have gained experience in both the lab and field settings from the research of Dr. Jesse Barber and Dr. Ian Robertson. With Dr.

Last fall, I applied to SMU and wrote about how like many institutions, SMU is a place where leaders are shaped. Not many institutions, however, can boast that its institution is shaping leaders inside and outside of the classroom. In my opinion, education is a tool one can use to change markets and societies, which is vital in order to eradicate global poverty. However, education is useless until one applies it to the real world. While Wake Forest University has provided me with a challenging curriculum, the lack of opportunities in Winston Salem almost make the classroom experience at Wake seem useless.…

Music is the universal language, and my duty as a devoted violinist is to convey my message of passion through every bow stroke. With the chance to exhibit and further develop my leadership skills as section leader and assistant concert mistress, I set the example for my fellow musicians by expressing true musicianship to fulfill my duty to the ensemble and execute a successful performance. Life is an orchestrated ensemble composed of varying styles and ever-changing tempos, and I believe that my ability…

To me, they were pillars of compassion, strength, and advocacy that inspired me to pursue nursing.…

In the past four years, I have had many experiences with family, friends and an extreme amount of clubs, activities, and home life occasions I am involved in. But in all honesty sports have taught me a lot about people, life and even myself. I have been a part of many teams in my lifetime and played several abstract sports, but at Summit Academy High School the sports are very unique. There are mixed attitudes towards the teams, players and coaches that you would not see at any other school. But I like to call them obstacles and challenges.…

I struggled to find people who shared my passion at a school with 100 high school students. In this new team, I found my future, but I also found struggles.…

It is important to develop skills that will not only improve your life but also your college life experience. Upon looking at the General Education Competencies that appears on the class syllabus, I decided on which skills are most important to develop in my humble opinion. One skill for example, that I find particularly essential is the ability to research and examine information, resources, and evidence that are both for academic use and those that are not necessarily for academic use. My reasoning is that, being able to have evidential support to what you are stating is critical since what you say typically follows you for the rest of your life.…

At the corner of Walker St. and Crescent St., across the road from Walker Jr. High School, passed La Palma Hospital, lies the largest campus of Anaheim Union High School District, John F. Kennedy (JFK) High School. From the parking lot into the school, I see Kennedy ’s quote, painted on the edge of the entrance, stating, “Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country.” Many other quotes by graduating classes were painted on the edge of the hallway overheads with the year underneath and all meant to inspire people.
