In January and February, the weather conditions became piercing cold and harsh. Because of this, people began dying from scurvy and other deadly diseases. However, a small handful of people were free from illness and these people, with their Puritan ethic, worked hard to take care of the ill and do their work. Sadly, the healthy were not able to take care of anyone and for this reason, half of the people who came have passed away. Furthermore, a young man made fun of the ill patients and one day, he became sick. Although he mocked the sick people, he still received treatment because the Puritans believed that they should help anyone in need even if they are rude and disrespectful to the sick because that is what they believed God would want them to do. Even though some people still ignored the fact that their God would not want the people who did not care mocking their friends and family, there were still others who cared for one another. For instance, the Indians were watching the settlers and examined what they did and one day, a group of Indians talked to them. Among the group of Indians, one bold character who spoke broken english, was the one who spoke and he talked about an Indian by the name of Squanto was familiar with the area that the Puritans had settled in and that he spoke really good English. After further discussion, the Indians had returned tools that they had stolen and also came back with their great Chief and Squanto. The chief and the settlers made a treaty to make peace with each other and live in harmony and it worked. After settling the agreements, the Indians left the settlers except for Squanto, who stayed to teach the settlers how to survive. The settlers believed that Squanto was a gift from God to help them strive and survive. To conclude, in the journal Of Plymouth Plantations by William Bradford, he show how people had strong faith in their God when they went on their hazardous voyage, trying to survive during the starving times, and when they came across the Indians in multiple ways.
