Mayella's Power In To Kill A Mockingbird

During the 1930’s in a small town called Maycomb, Alabama, a white women by the name of Mayella Ewell, shocked the whole town when she accused Tom Robinson, an African American, of raping her when all Tom wanted to do was to help her with her chores. It started when Mayella was putting her hands all over Tom because she wanted to know what it was like to kiss a black man. Tom did not like it and was forcing his way out until Mayella's dad came in to see that Tom was forcing his way out away from Mayella. This of course led to Mayella and Tom in the courtroom. Atticus Finch was the lawyer for Tom. He was proving his innocence. Mr. Gilbert was the lawyer for Mayella. Not being surprised, Mayella won the case and Tom was sent to prison. During this time period with Mayella being white, she was so powerful that even though she lives behind a dumpster, she is still considered better than African Americans because of her skin color. …show more content…
I personally think she has more power because of her race. During the 1930’s there were the Jim Crow Laws that separated African Americans to Americans, African Americans were considered the weaker race. Meaning that no one would agree or become friends with an African American. Life was hard back then, just knowing that not many people like you based on your skin color.
