“The average American is exposed to at least three thousand ads every day and will spend three years of his or her life watching television commercials. Advertising makes up about 70 percent of our newspapers and 40 percent of our mail” (Kilbourne 90). Whether society realizes it or not, ads continue to influence people everywhere they go and every day of their lives. These ads affect how people see themselves and what they choose to purchase so that they can look better in society’s eyes and feel better about the way they look. The controversy of what ads do or do not do to earth’s population has been an ongoing conversation contributed to by many. In this particular Maybelline ad, published in Cosmopolitan, a skinny model with perfect hair, …show more content…
Due to these dark colors, the eye goes to her skin, especially the close up of her face on the left. On the right side, the darkness continues with an all-black outfit, shadows behind her in the street, and two pallets of eye shadows; one pallet is in the container, and the other freely spread across the page. This photo is zoomed out more showing off her see-through top covered with a jacket to conceal her breasts paired with black, skintight, leather pants and black heels. Her hand placement also suggests sexual desires; Emily grips each side of her jacket as if she were about to rip it off at any moment, revealing her see-through top completely. Once again, her mouth is slightly open in this photo; alluding to the sexual desires, she may have. Finally, her provocative stance makes her even more sexualized in the ad. Emily is shown slightly slouched back, with her chest being pushed further out than the rest of her body showing off her see-through top that shows just enough to leave room for mystery of what is underneath the remainder of it. The heels that she wears make her legs look even longer and more desirable than if she were wearing flats or sneakers since it slims them out. Since Emily is shown as tall, thin, and beautiful, she could be considered the perfect girl or it girl that girls strive to become. This makes girls think that in order to be the “it girl,” they must wear heavy makeup and revealing clothing like Emily does.
