Healing was practiced only by a very few individuals who would have inherited and received extensive training. Healers (shamans) would be acting as a medium in between the physical and spiritual world as well as using different techniques and herbs to heal their patients.
Mayan healing was based on the six primary principles as well as using other techniques and tools such as: using herbal medicine, cupping, use of the sastun (a stone or crystal that marks a healer and it is used to communicate with the Maya spirits), spirit guides, ritual and soul retrieval ceremonies.
Life force or Ch’ulel is the fundamental of the Mayan medicine and is the first of the six principles. Ch’ulel is to be from a divine and spiritual source. Ch’ulel binds everyone and everything together. The second principle is that there is no separation between the body and the soul. The third Mayan healing principle to recognise of natural cycles and the veneration of plants. They believe that illnesses were the cause of supernatural forces. If an Inca broke law, lied or sinned against any gods, it was enough reason to become ill. Inca priests were also doctors; the treatments were often more magic than medicine. They had different types of doctors and very experienced surgeons for different part of healing process. They were very advanced in brain surgery for their time. Becoming a doctor was not an easy journey and it was passed from father to son.
