The Guatemalan government classified the Mayans as internal enemies. The government brought up the fact of racist notions towards Mayan members of an inferior culture. This whole situation started due of the fact people saw Mayan members as the reason for Guatemala's poverty. They called them lazy, useless, and worthless (Guatemalan 1981-1983).
