Mayan Calendar Research Paper

Culture is extremely important to people. It can influence their way of living and the way they are. They make adjustments based on their culture. Throughout time, diverse people have devised calendars to emulate the time within their culture. Sometimes they even modify the way their calendar originally was in order to benefit a contrasting part of their culture. For example, Egyptians first organized their calendars based on the moon cycles; however, they later changed that. The Mayan calendar was created using a scheme of charts of numbers expressed by bars and dots. Even the Julian calendar was reconstructed in order to fit the way of the liturgical calendar. This source provides information that the calendar was "scrawled in red and black is charts of numbers represented by bars and dots in the typical Maya fashion." The Mayan people were acknowledged for many things, one of which was their art. The red and black depict that some art and time was kept in the unusual form of bars and dots which was a part of their culture as well. In their culture, they "denoted time spans corresponding to the cycles of the Mayan calendar," meaning that they split their time up in order for it to accurately follow their calendar. They did things their way and did not to adopt to the solar cycle. Their calendar also has records of movements of Venus because it has a particularly important role in Maya religion. Because of this, they Mayan people were able to predict planetary cycles including the phases of the moon and Venus, even eclipses.
