What does it mean? Is what she said relatable to me or not? When I read what Maya said, it made me think if we are truly alike? I think what she said,”We are more alike than we are unalike”, is true. I believe she is right because of various reasons and to me it seems that even though there are many differences we still have similarities like issues, families, and emotions.

In Barack Obama’s speech, he says, “We may not look the same…, but we all want to move in the same direction.” Maya Angelou expressed the idea that we don’t all look the same, but we are the same in a different way than Barack Obama. She used examples of how people have different skin colors and skin tones, then tied it together at the end of the poem, saying that we’re more alike than unalike. Barack Obama said it in a more simplified way, but still got the meaning across. These two quotes are similar because they both talk about how everyone has differences in appearance.…

I have read many books in the 16 years I have been alive. However, no book has fulfilled me more than Roshani Chokshi’s extraordinary book The Star-Touched Queen. The Star-Touched Queen is a book written in magnificent prose, which retells the story of Hades and Persephone with Hindu mythology. It has been nominated for an award and has been reviewed positively by many. Imagery is dominant in this poem, especially after Maya questions her oppressors. Most of the imagery is conveyed through similes and metaphors, and gives the readers a clear view on what Maya is trying to get across. The use of figurative language gives the readers a clear picture of what Maya means and usually conveys a strong emotion. When Maya says “Shoulders falling down like teardrops” we can get an image of drooping shoulders (like the shape of a tear) and the tear itself is associated with sadness. I found one particular stanza quite amusing; Maya asks questions that are aimed at the ‘white’ people.…
