Caged Bird Sings Poem

“I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings” by Maya Angelou is one of the poems that I will never forget, it is one of my favorite poems. It is a poem that really makes you ask yourself questions. Questions like, why would she write something like this? She mainly wrote it because of her background. From the time her parents divorced till the time she was raped. She felt like she was nothing and useless. A lot of people feel like this sometimes and they could relate to this poem. This poem is strong and emotional, which means some of the lines would make an excellent epigraph. Angelou wants people to speak out about what has happened to them and stand up for themselves. He wants you to imagine the black road running under the running boards of the car and the wind hitting his face and running through his hair. The title is very important to the work Starks has written. It is important because that is how the young boy and his uncle bonded. He let the boy ride on the running boards since no one else would let him. He really looked up to his uncle after that. I really liked “Running Boards” because it can relate to almost anyone. You have a family member, celebrity, or someone you look up to for either guidance or because that did something for you that nobody else did. It is always good to find a poem you can relate too. Starks used symbolism in this poem also, it took me some time to find it, but he uses the road running under the car as a sense of time. He says in the poem that as the road runs under the car, it is like time is flying by. This poem really spoke to me because there have been some people in my life that did things for me that no one else would have and I look up to that person now. I want to be like that person
