Maya Angelou wrote the short story “Graduation” in her book “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings” that was published in 1970. Maya is one strong and passionate writer and she does not fail to show her excellent writing skills even in this story. The story’s tone is quite interesting as it is both sad and happy. Consider the part where she explains how the graduating class made their way to the hall: girls holding hands and not bothering to speak to the juniors. They were sad as though the school that they have been studying in was a new environment to them whereas the boys on the other hand were happy, more outgoing and showing signs that this place is their home and could not mind starting all over again. He comes with another man who I think is the body guard. This other man is not courteous and heads to sit on the principal’s chair but the minister offers his seat instead. This white man should have waited to be asked to take a seat at least. Donleavy takes a look at his audience just to make sure it is real then starts reading from his written speech. He says he was happy to be there and says he is seeing progress like in other schools showing that he is comparing the white and black schools yet there were no improvements that were being made in the school. However, he uses this phrase to try and make the blacks that they are not being left out yet it is evident that the black and white schools were two different worlds. He also adds that there are great things in store for the children of stamp but these great things are seen to only go to the white kids. Throughout his speech, his audience had lost interest and Angelou says that they were dead words falling like bricks meaning that the speech had no positive impact on his audience. It was clear that his speech was tailored for the wrong audience and adding that he was a politician explains it all, he was building a world of utopia based on imagination and not real life. Mr. Donleavy tries to impress his audience by using sports and praising some of the great basket ball players who studied at the school but in the end, the speech had negative effects since it was presented in a one sided
