Maya Angelou’s Captivating Use of Imagery
In the following craft analysis of poet, Maya Angelou, we will be able to learn more on how he incorporates imagery throughout her work. The poems that I have chosen to analyze are “Life Doesn’t Frighten Me” and “Alone.” Her poem “Life Doesn’t Frighten Me,” is about going through life without fear, and doing what you want to do even if it might scare you. The poem “Alone” is about how no one can go through life by themselves. She paints a picture of chaos and sadness when a person is alone. Maya tries to warn people that you cannot survive without a companion by your side. With these two poems, we can see that Maya Angelou has a strong sense of imagery within a lot of her work. Angelou’s strong imagery comes from her usage of details, word choice, senses and dictation.

While reading these two poems, if you look closely, you’ll be able to find ways that Maya used dictation within her work. In the poem, “Alone” she uses more of a connotation to drive the theme home. An example of this is in the fifth stanza of the poem. The whole stanza works together to paint a scene. This scene is a typical cloudy sky that is brings us a sense of dread. However, the meaning that Maya Angelou uses in this stanza is slightly different. She is describing how being alone is the same as always living in a cloudy state where the person only knows disparity. She also uses this technique in the poem “Life Doesn’t Frighten Me.” For example, line 30 she wrote, “Kissy little girls.” At first glance a person would only understand that she was talking about other little girls. When in fact, Maya, is hinting at a much different and deeper meaning to those words. In this poem those words represent the fear and jealousy many young African American children faced when going to a predominantly white

Imagery is the use of figurative language to represent objects, actions, and ideas in such a way that it appeals to our physical senses. In Maya Angelou’s selection from her memoir, Sister Flowers, Angelou uses imagery to help the readers paint and imagine a realistic picture in one’s mind. The author writes, “The sweet smell of vanilla had met us as she opened the door” (par. 29). This description of the fragrant vanilla scent allows the reader to experience the smell along with Marguerite. Angelou chooses to include descriptive words and phrases to emphasize the smell the reader is encountering.…

40 years ago, American government went from celebrating influential African Americans for only a week to a full month. This became the start of Black History Month. In the month of February, Americans celebrate and remember black heroes around the United States. They commemorate the efforts and accomplishments that were made to alleviate discrimination towards African Americans in order for us to have a chance at becoming successful and living the “American Dream” in peace. Marie Therese Colimon is a female poem writer who wrote “Encounter.” In this poem she uses the literary element imagery to discuss how an individual, preferably a woman is acting when she runs into someone they knew very closely and she neglects to tell the other individual how she truly feels internally. The form of imagery that is being represented by the author is used to express the emotional and complicated role of a female. For example, in the poem Marie portrays a conversation to show the imagery of gender roles of a female being caring, vulnerable, and emotional. One quote that represents the gender role of social outlook and imagery is “ Listen to that tune from the house opposite, then we would each other go off across the city, carrying in our hearts, full with silent sobs.”…

In Maya Angelou’s poem it’s a little complicated at first when you read through the stanzas you would think it was written in a heroic couplet sort of pattern but it switches up and seems very free verse but I guess that’s just Maya’s style of writing. There’s definitely personification and symbolism in the poem by Maya making her home Africa into a woman and using her different body parts to represent and describe some of the features her home has. “Deserts her hair / golden her feet / mountains her breasts” (3-5).…

The different poetic devices emphasise Maya Angelou’s message. Firstly, the repetition of “I Rise” and “I’ll Rise” 10 times during the poem, is very significant because it emphasises how much confidence and strength she has even though she suffers so severely from society being racist towards her. By repeating it throughout the poem it portrays her determination to overcome all the problems she faces during her life. Also, by repeating “I rise” it emphasises the speaker’s message which is to always fight for your rights and live strong. In line 5 the speaker asks a rhetorical question, “Does my sassiness upset you?”…

In Still I Rise by Maya Angelou, we read about the experiences an oppressed African woman faces while living in America, she uses the medium of poetry to express the images and emotions she has struggled with in her life. Throughout the poem we get to see how she argues that even the saddest movements we experience in life can be transferred in a shift in perception, and that these movements can provide the foundation for an improved life. That it is an exercise in which it examines the choices people make in the way they perceive themselves, and the way these choices can alter their identity. Angelou demonstrates an example a way in which perception of the past can be altered to a revolutionary new way of thinking. Angelou’s narrator builds…

During this time all freedom and opportunities were taken away from all African American people and in the end they knew it was crucial to make their voices heard and to sing for their freedom. Maya uses “fat worms” as a metaphor for opportunity and even though the “clipped wings, tied feet” and “bars of rage” disheartened the caged bird it never stopped singing, this symbolizes the African Americans fighting back for their freedom simply through their voice. Overall the poem “Caged Bird” by Maya Angelou uses many literacy terms such as alliteration and also repetition. The metaphors used from poem are used well and creatively, it would have been hard to know what Maya Angelou was talking when comparing the caged bird and the free bird if it wasn’t for remarkable background and her fame from her book “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings”.…
