Maya Angelou was born with the name Marguerite Annie Johnson, Angelou had a very tough childhood. Her parents parted ways while she was still undeveloped, she and her elder brother, Bailey, were both sent to live with their fathers, mother, Anne Henderson, In Stamps, Arkansas. As a Black American, Angelou endured racial discrimination and prejudices and discrimination in Arkansas. During a visit with her mother, Maya Angelou was raped by her mother's boyfriend at the fresh age of seven. Her uncles avenged the action of her mother's boyfriend by murdering him. Maya Angelou was traumatized by the encounter. She returned to Kansas speechless and remained so for years. During World War Two, Maya Angelou moved to San Francisco, California. The son was entitled, Guy. After giving Birth to Guy she worked numerous jobs to support herself and also her descendant. In 1952, Maya Angelou married Anastasias Angelopoulos, A Greek sailor. Maya Angelou took her professional name ("Maya Angelou") from her husband. Her name was a blend of her childhood nickname and a shortened version of her husband's last name. In the mid-1950s, her career as a performer began to take flight. She got a role in a tutoring production of Porgy and Bess, later she appeared in an off-Broadway production entitled Calypso Heat Wave in 1957. Maya Angelou released her first album "Miss Calypso" in the year 1957. Maya Angelou was a member of the Harlem Writers Guild and she was also a civil rights activist. Maya Angelou organized and starred in the musical revue "Cabaret for Freedom". The goal of her musical revue was to help the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. Maya Angelou also served as the Northern coordinator for the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. In 1961 Maya Angelou appeared in another off-Broadway production of Jean Genet.
