Maya Angelou Biography Maya Angelou was an inspiration to many people. She was mostly known for her autobiographies, poetry books, and standing up for womens’ and Africans’ rights. Maya was born in St. Louis, Missouri on April 4, 1928, and lived there until she was three years old. Her parents got divorced, forcing her and her brother to move to Stamps, Arkansas. Maya lived with her grandma, Annie Henderson, Uncle Willie, and her brother, Bailey Jr. Maya died on May 28, 2014. She passed in her home, having had heart problems and being frail before her death. She was 86. Maya’s original name was Marguerite Annie Johnson. She later changed it when she married Anastasios Angelopoulos, using a mix of his surname and her childhood nickname. Maya lived for a long time. She conquered a hard life and created many great things. She overcame poverty, sought a higher education, and created her own wealth. Because of the media she created, the struggles she went through, and her standing up for womens’ and African American rights, I think Maya Angelou was an amazing and inspirational leader.
