Maya Angelou was a poet, writer, actor, streetcar conductor, singer, dancer, cook, memoirist, educator, dramatist, civil rights activist and a teen mom. Where did it all start? It all started on a special day in April.
Maya Angelou was born on April 4, 1928 . Her birth name is Marguerite Annie Johnson. When she was three, her parents got divorced and she and her brother went to live with their grandmother in Stamps, Arkansas.
When Maya Angelou was seven, she was molested by her mother’s boyfriend during a visit with her mother. He was murdered by her uncles,a few days after his release from jail . She felt like her words killed the man, so stopped talking for about five years.
When Maya Angelou was about 13 she started to speak again . Bertha Flowers helped her by introducing her to authors such as Edgar Allen Poe, Charles Dickens, William Shakespeare and many more.

She went to California Labor school and a few weeks after graduating school at about age 17, She gave birth to her first son, Guy Johnson, and had several jobs to support herself and her son.
In 1951, Maya Angelou married a Greek sailor named Tosh Angelos and she took dance classes in which she met Alvin Ailey and Ruth Beckford. Maya and Alvin Ailey formed a dance team called “Al and Rita” but never became
