Maya Angelou Phenomenal Women

Improved Essays
This poem by Maya Angelou represents the ideal women. The poem begins with a conversational approach as the speaker claims she is not physically a perfect woman yet she attracts the attention from others everywhere she goes. Throughout the poem, Maya Angelou constantly repeats the phrase “phenomenal women, that’s me” to emphasize the speaker’s confident attitude. Maya Angelou claims that beauty is not what makes a women phenomenal instead it’s the way she represents herself that makes her phenomenal. I chose this poem because it perfectly depicts Lady Delacour’s false appearance and behavior. Lady Delacour is an elegant recognized woman who many people admire but that’s only a false image. Lady Delacour appears to be a happy confident woman

In “The First Rate Wife” Cornelius gives an epitome of what he expects from his ideal wife whilst Maya Angelou speaks about how tantalizing she is. In the month of February, Americans celebrate and remember black heroes around the United States. They commemorate the efforts and accomplishments that were made to alleviate discrimination towards African Americans in order for us to have a chance at becoming successful and living the “American Dream” in peace. Maya Angelou acted as a teacher through her writing which would correct many people’s lives, by telling them what they are truly capable of (Casey 2-3). She had many lessons to teach through her writing and the common theme was that all of the obstacles she had to face didn’t slow her down, but instead those challenging moments inspired her to keep moving which ultimately made her a better person (“Angelou’s Generational Impact” 1-2). Not only did she speak her mind when defending her nature, she stood up for women as well. The definition of a cultural hero varies by each person who gives an opinion. There are no set guidelines for what a hero is or does. Oxford English Dictionary define a hero as someone who has “superhuman strength, courage, or ability, favoured by the gods.” To somebody, a hero could be the man who swept the nation off of their feet in the political election, and to somebody else, it could be their grandma who lives a plain life up in Kansas on a farm. In this case, a cultural hero is rooted in their beliefs, resembles hope, persists in the face of fear, and renews society in the name of common good.…

In Maya Angelou’s poem it’s a little complicated at first when you read through the stanzas you would think it was written in a heroic couplet sort of pattern but it switches up and seems very free verse but I guess that’s just Maya’s style of writing. There’s definitely personification and symbolism in the poem by Maya making her home Africa into a woman and using her different body parts to represent and describe some of the features her home has. “Deserts her hair / golden her feet / mountains her breasts” (3-5).…
