Maya Angelou: Diversity In The Classroom

Like Maya Angelou, I firmly believe that “It is time for parents to teach young people early on that in diversity there is beauty and there is strength.” While Angelou was not only talking about diversity in the classroom, this quote aligns well with my beliefs about diversity in the classroom. I believe that as a teacher, I must do as much as possible to help the increasingly diverse learners in my classroom be successful. I believe that diversity isn’t an “issue” to be handled in the classroom, but an incredible learning opportunity. Because of this belief, I interpret Angelou’s quote as saying it is a teacher’s responsibility in the classroom to teach students that diversity is truly a strength and should be used to its fullest potential, …show more content…
I believe that diversity is a learning opportunity and an asset for all students. For example, in my Instructional Design and Assessment practicum many students were bilingual, meaning that they spoke both English and Spanish. It was incredibly valuable for those bilingual students to be able to talk to each other and explain their thinking in their native language first before sharing with the class in English. During my student teaching experience, students came from many different familial, educational, and cultural backgrounds. Students benefited from sharing their differing perspectives with one another to gain a deeper understanding of the diverse world around them. For example in my student teaching experience we were reading aloud a book that included a parent going back to school at night. One student connected to this experience and shared her ideas and memories about when her mother was going to college at night. Diversity could also be found in interpretation of activities in my student teaching experience. The first graders benefited from hearing different perspectives on things like math problems and reading passages because it showed that there was no one right answer or way to learn. It is my personal goal to show students that there is no one right perspective or way of finding an answer in my classroom and to help students see the incredible value in their own as well as their classmates’

Groud and Vaughn explored the approach of inclusive teaching for those of all backgrounds, especially those with learning disabilities. While reading both of these articles my question did not change. It gave a great analysis of how to implement an inclusive teaching environment. From the research on both papers, there is a consensus that teachers must continually assess themselves and the students, create an inclusive learning environment, and try to cater to all the students needs in their lesson plans. If there is one thing I would like to see in any future research is more hard data, numbers to see how this type of teaching has benefited the students.…

One day in class Mrs. Bolmer asked “Who read the book assigned yesterday?” and of course I did my homework so I raised my hand. Mrs. Bolmer then asked me to retell what I had read. So I did, I told her my version of the story, the story I made up in my head. My classmates began to laugh at me because what I told Mrs. Bolmer was nothing like what they had read at that point I felt crushed. Mrs. Bolmer asked “Did you read the story last night?”.…

Students are paired up with an ELL student and are to interact with them through various activities. This should be incorporated within all schools because it allows ELL students to become comfortable with the environment and allows the enlgish language to be pick up more quickly and fluently. Personally, my mother is an educator within the Toronto District School Board and this system has been implemented within her school and has seen improvements in the grasping of the language. Becoming an educator myself, I believe that the most important trait that a teacher can possess is that they love the job that they have. If they do not, the students will unfortunately not grasp the core information of the…

I also really enjoy learning about other cultures. I have chosen to explore the majors of Secondary Education and Human Development and Family Studies because these majors appeal to my interest and I think I could have successful careers in each. First, I chose to explore the major of secondary education because with that I can specialize in English and Spanish and then get certified to teach English as a second language. I believe I would enjoy specializing in these two subjects…

I have learned that leaders need to be visible and model the desired behaviors that the school is expecting from its students. I need to reinforce to my teachers that I support them in the classroom as long as it is legal and treats the kids with dignity and respect. I need to create an environment in which teachers feel comfortable in asking for help, sharing input and suggestions as well as reinforcing to all my staff that I value each ones’ input and no one has the right to dominate policies or discussions. I will have to work on communication as a leader, both expressing my expectations to my staff as well as listening. I need to be able to listen to the concerns and suggestions from both my students, parents and staff.…

Many factors contribute to a positive classroom environment; addressing these three can create a solid foundation to a successful classroom. I believe it is the teacher’s responsibility to ensure their student’s safety and that they are contributing to positive learning. I am going to encourage my students to study other cultures, to accept students into their social groups regardless of their economic status, and realize races does not mean a student is any different than them intellectually. I will give my students all of the same opportunities and encourage them to better their education because THEY WANT TO. Self-awareness and self-encouragement is also very important and will be major aspects of my…

Vision Statement: Goals for My Future Classroom According to Jensen (1998), “as a teacher, you have more influence over the volition and engagement of your students than you may realize” (p. 2230). With this in mind, I want to ensure that as a future educator, I will become known as a helper, supporter, and teacher who is passionate about her job and her students. I feel these qualities reflect on students the most. I will strive for excellence in the teaching world. My goal for my future classroom is to be the best motivator I can be because without motivation, students’ learning cannot be accessed to its fullest extent.…
