Angelou’s writing is influenced by her past. A major experience that impacts Angelou’s writing is her encountering with segregation. Growing up during the 1930’s, a time full of oppression towards African Americans, Angelou was limited to things she could do. Well atleast that is what society told her. Society telling her to not do certain things due to her color made Angelou want to go out and do them even more. When Angelou told her mother of her plan, her mother says “They don’t accept colored people on the streetcars”(80). Angelou responds in her head by saying “I would like to claim an immediate fury which was followed by the noble determination to break the restricting tradition”(80). Angelou continues to go to the job office and hopes of getting an interview. Angelou tries tirelessly to get the job. Angelou finally gets the job after trying with pure determination.
