Self-Discovery In Maya Angelou's Literature

she went through the process of self-discovery. In the article it tells how Maya’s childhood showed the lack of self-confidence and unimportance she felt. On page four she explained how awful it was to wear hand-me-down clothes, and was a “too-big Negro girl with nappy hair, broad feet and a space between her teeth that would hold a number two pencil” (Gale 1999). Being black in a segregated society Maya looked down on herself and felt small. This is why Maya found it encouraging to make her works something to affect others and make a change. Angelou examined her childhood and responded by making a persona. In the article St. James Guide to Young Adult Writers, on page three She said, “she invented herself because she was tired of society inventing her,” (Gale 1999). Maya was tired being of degraded of her personality, of a stereotype, of being labeled as something she wasn’t. They showed this trait when they both stood up for their moral beliefs, they both believed in equality for all people. The Bible verse Joshua 1:9 says, “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you where you go” (NIV). This Bible verse relates to both Atticus Finch and Maya Angelou because even though it was tough to be brave and go against the common flow; they knew what was still right to stand up for. In the beginning of the verse it says “Have I not commanded you?” these are the words God spoke calling his people to be courageous and do what is right.
