In order to ensure his own personal well being and that of those loyal him, he created an unfair system. Ninety-five percent of the population toils in farms, factories, and construction sites. The proletariat don’t even get to enjoy to their fruits of labor, and are forced to give up their produce to the government. Their hard work supplies the lavish lifestyles of the top five percent, who are Thanum lackeys. Often these lackeys steal, and murder civilians with impunity. The gap between the upper and lower class is tremendous. The lower class lives in squalor, there is no clean water available to them, and starvation is the leading cause of death. Freedom of speech has been constricted such that the government can not be criticized. If one even attempted to debase the rule of Thanum, and was caught, they would be sentenced to death. People who support Democracy have been known to ‘disappear’ and are never seen again. There is no privacy. In addition, the government constantly monitors all areas both public and private. Cameras are placed inside homes and even bathrooms. All phones and computers are tapped by the government. Policemen are used as undercover spies, causing distrust between citizens, keeping them in line. Also, all forms of foreign communication have been cut off. There is no easy way in or out. The entire country is barricaded by a twenty foot tall electric fence, patrolled constantly by the military. Only three citizens have ever managed to escape the country.
