Max's Short Story: The Haunted House

The hill’s decline made Max feel as if her world were being forced on its axis, and, in a way, it was. She eyed her destination. It was the easiest thing to do. The lawn was dead and the house was fading; nothing looked well-kept. William’s absence was clear.

A sharp pang hit her heart as she recalled the series of days that led to the funeral.

The constant pain. The tears. The screams of denial. The body-numbing realization the final goodbyes day threw upon everyone.

And then, not even a month after, her departure.

She didn’t know where she built up the functions to keep on going. Her life in Seattle was nothing more than a blur for the first year. She began coming to terms with it, telling herself it was for the best - that life without Chloe would be fine. Every time the thought came to mind, though, it was as if she were

Being a photographer made her a good observer, and an even better imaginer.

She imagined a perfect world, where everything was bright and beautiful, and nothing ever died in pain. A world where no-one cried tears of sadness

She imagined walking up the driveway, admiring all the flowers that weren’t crippled from the winter air. She wouldn’t have to knock, because she may as well have been living with the Price family. Inside, the house would smell of warm Christmas cookies, and every corner would be decorated with tiny, colorful bulbs. The Christmas tree would leave no space in the living room, and the presents would be dangerously close to the fireplace.

But who ever heard of a warm Christmas?

Max also imagined not walking away from the house for the third in that week
