Maxine had a difficult time adapting to the American culture because of the language. It is hard to learn a new language, but you have to give it a try at least. There will be always people that will make fun of you no matter what. This problem can cause someone to lose confidence like Maxine. When she asked for direction, her voice was shrinking. It was impossible for her to complete the sentence, since the bus driver acted if he didn’t understand anything (pg 167). In some cases, people just give up but Maxine didn’t’. It was a lesson for her. She was getting better and better. She was brave enough to ask the postman for stamps issues, the postman without any rejection gave her the stamps
