The prisoners who escaped were Frank Lee Morris, John Anglin, and Clarence Anglin. Their escape is one of the most famous in history and is known as the “Great Escape”. Each guard had around 1-3 prisoners to watch over. 36 prisoners tried to escape, 14 came back, 23 were caught, 6 were shot and killed, 2 drowned, and 5 disappeared. Some prisoners you might/might not know are James “Whitey” Bulger (1959-1962), George “Machine Gun” Kelly (1934), and Roy Gardner (1934-1936.) These Natives were call the Ohlone (a Miwok Indian word that means “Western People.”) Alcatraz was used for banishment for the members violating the tribal laws. Despite the tales/legends of evil spirits, Alcatraz was also used by the Indians as an area for gathering food, especially bird eggs and sea life. After the Native Americans, the Army used Alcatraz for a military prison. The Army made a fort on Alcatraz. 1861 - 1865 Alcatraz became the biggest American fort west of the Mississippi River. For an inmate to earn a special privilege such as, go out too the recreation yard, or have visits with family members they must follow the rules and work for the allotted time they’re assigned. As years progressed at Alcatraz the schedule changed up a little bit but typically you would wake up at 6:30 A.M., stand up to get taken accounted for, get dressed, clean up the cell, and march in an orderly fashion to the mess hall. After you return from breakfast you get counted again, get ready for work, march to the recreation yard, line up in an orderly fashion and get accounted for and there were counts every half hour at work. Usually inmates would finish work around 4:30 P.M. and head back to the cell house to be accounted for. As the evening progressed you would be counted several times and then when 9:30 P.M. hit that meant lights out for every inmate, even when prisoners were sleeping they were still doing head counts every hour throughout the night.…

Procedures include identifying the most violent criminals, frequent head-counts, clear rules and regulations, and ongoing searches for contraband. For those who tried to escape, it wasn't long until the guards knew you were missing. Security guard towers were built around the island at four strategic locations, cells were rebuilt and fitted with tool-proof steel cell fronts and locking devices operated from control boxes, and windows were made secure with iron bars. Electromagnetic metal detectors were placed in the entrance of the dining hall and workshops, with remote controlled tear gas canisters mounted on the ceiling above the mess hall, making the mess hall one of the most heavily guarded areas at Alcatraz. Guards were armed with machine guns and would patrol along the corridors.…

The island was used by the U.S. Army for a little over eighty years until it was turned over to the Federal Bureau of Prisons. In 1933, “The Federal Government had decided to open a maximum-security, minimum-privilege penitentiary to deal with the most incorrigible inmates in Federal prisons, and to show the law-abiding public that the Federal Government was serious about stopping the rampant crime of the 1920s and 1930s.” (Alcatraz) This was the start to the twenty-nine years the prison was enforcing strict rules to some of the toughest prisoners.…
