Jails: Jails are usually local accommodations that only house criminals who are either waiting for their trial, or have committed a minor crime, and therefore have short sentences. These inmates are often entering the system for the first time and tend to me young, poor, and uneducated.
Maximum Security Prisons: Prisons house criminals for more serious crimes that require a sentence of over one year. Maximum security prisons are completely enclosed, guard tower and all, and restrict contact between inmates. These type of institutions are the highest security and primarily focus on containing and controlling criminals.
