Maximilian Kolbe- initially given the name of Raymond Kolbe, was born on January 7th, 1894 in downtown Poland. Both parents, Juliuz Kolbe and Maria Dobrowska worked on a consistent bases to try and provide the best life possible for their children. Kolbe lived in a predominately catholic household and remained a devoted follower of catholicism. He recognized the unlawful actions being taking by the Nazi’s and decided to act upon it. Kolbe felt it was his duty as human being, and a catholic priest to save those who were in need of help- and he accomplished just that. In world war 2, Jewish people were being hunted and captured like rabbit dogs and were being sought out in their homes, streets, and in local churches. The places where these people once called home- became a place to fear and demoralized them as human beings. Instead of being a neutral party in the chaos, Kolbe decided to take a stand and fight for what he knew to be right. Kolbe opened up his monastery to any and all jewish people he could find. He provided food, shelter, and clothing to any jewish person that required it. In doing so, he saved approximately 2,000 Jewish refugees. In order to maintain appearances, he falsified ID’s for the jewish people to be pronounced under a different ethnic background. This was a security precaution taken just in case Kolbe 's monastery was raided. Maximilian Kolbe saved these jewish people from persecution by the nazi’s. Afterwards Maximilian Kolbe made an illegal broadcast that denounced the crimes the nazi party was committing. The Idea of the holocaust was pushed aside as rumor by other nations until they became aware that it was not a hoax and hitler was indeed committing these acts of cruelty. Kolbe then published a book that reinforced the statements being made about the nazi’s. In his best efforts to save the jewish people, Maximilian Kolbe was determined to spread awareness about the holocaust.
