Stanley Kubrick is considered one of the greatest film directors of all time. Because of this it is interesting to consider his major influences from the golden era of film. The funny situation about these two is that while Ophuls career and life ended in 1957 toward the end of the golden age of film Kubrick?s career was just beginning toward the end of the golden age of film with his first major motion picture The Killing coming a year before Ophul?s death. We will start by exploring Ophul?s influence on Kubrick and then we will compare some individual Ophul and Kubrick films with each other.

In his book The Wolfe at the Door: Stanley Kubrick History and the Holocaust author Geoffrey Cocks to Ophul?s influence on Kubrick. One of the biggest technical influences that Cocks says Ophuls had on Kubrick was the dolly shots Kubrick had become famous for. This can be seen in the film Paths of Glory where it leads the viewer through the claustrophobic trenches. It also represented a kind of ?predatory swoop of the birds of prey?
