Wing’s Chips” is a short story by Mavis Gallant with a very meaningful message. The theme I felt the short story carried was that even though many people have different views on what is right or wrong, they want to be respected and accepted for who they are. “Wing’s Chips” focus is on three separate cultures, who in the end learned to respect each other. I feel as though many people could relate to this story if they have been racially discriminated against. The story is based on young girl and her father from England who go to spend a summer in a rural French-Canadian Quebec town. She sees her father, a painter, as useless and disappointing compared to other fathers in the town. She continued cursing, not at me but my father. When I was done bagging her items she started telling me how I am really good at my job and was trying to belittle my dad by comparing me to him, I smiled and right before she was about to leave I said “Thanks, but the reason why I am so good at my job is because of the man you disrespected for a good 20 minutes, my dad, who has taught me everything, but have a great day, see you again.” She slid in a few more swear words, directed at me this time and left. That was one of the first times I had seen what happens to people of color or a minority group, and it happened to my father almost daily and he has become immune to it, but since that day I have been traumatized by how low people can stoop to belittle people of different views and beliefs.
