Mauthausen is a concentration camp that was used during the Holocaust. It was constructed in Austria, housed a few thousand prisoners at the beginning of the Holocaust, and by the end because of the Spanish Civil War held a few thousand more. Mauthausen was built in Austria in the city of Mauthausen just on the bank of the Danube River (USHMM). During WWII, Mauthausen held approximately 200,000 prisoners (Hensley). Just after construction, August 1938, the camp leader transferred about 300 prisoners into the camp. By the end of the same year there were up to 1,000 of them (USHMM).
