Although Auschwitz was a horrible concentration camp, Mauthausen was also a terrible concentration camp. The sick and weak were sent to Mauthausen to die. Mauthausen was one of the worst concentration camps in World War II due to its organization, treatment of its prisoners, and its death toll. On August 1,1938 Mauthausen concentration camp was established. The first commander was SS Captain Albert Sauer. He was a commander until February 17, 1939. Then SS Colonel Franz Ziereis replaced him and remained commander until May 1945. The had over 100 subcamps, but they had 4 main subcamps.
