Mauritania, despite the official abolishment of slavery in 1981, one of latest countries to do so, and proclamation of slavery as a crime in 2007, in reality still tolerate the practice. The country has a very high percentage of slaves among the citizens. According to Global slavery index "43,000 people or 1.06% of the total population live in conditions of modern and traditional slavery in Mauritania" (“Mauritania - global slavery index 2016,” 2016).
