Mount Saint Helens First Hand Account- Tom Roe The eruption of Mount Saint Helens impacted thousands the day of its eruption, and the weeks following. The lives of everyday people were drastically changed; cars caught fire due to engine failure, trees hundreds of years old were flung down like toys, more than 540,000 tons of ash was dispelled by the volcano, and flew as far as Minnesota.…
Prior to this eruption, on March 27 of the same year “a steam explosion and crater opening occurred at the mountain’s peak.” For a few weeks, this steam continued to come out of the crater that was growing on the mountain as well as ash. Then, towards the end of April, people began noticing a bulge on the north side of the mountain that continuously grew larger. By the time the volcano erupted, the “north side of Mount St. Helens bulged out 300 feet and increase[ed] at a rate of five or six feet a day. This was caused by magma rising inside the mountain” which led to Mount St. Helens erupting.…
BIKINI ATOLL Bikini Atoll is just a normal, small, island-like landform, right? Wrong! Bikini Atoll was where one of the most dangerous hydrogen bombs the US has ever created was tested. Today, 60 years after it was tested, the islands are still deserted due to radiation! I'm going to tell you what happened there, how its like now, and talk a bit about the damage.…

Hawaii’s Kilauea versus Mount Fujiyama Ever since I was a little girl I have always been fascinated with volcanoes. How do they work? How hot is the lava exactly? Can you travel down into the funnel of a volcano, and if so how and will you survive?…
On the 24h of August 79ce, the volcano Vesuvius erupted. It was an eruption that lasted 24 hours. The eruption was cast into 2 stages. The first part was were the volcano released debris into the air almost twice the height of Mount Everest. The second part was when all of the debris rolled down the huge hill enclosing most of the towns in a thick haze.…
Hawaii has the most active and the largest volcanoes in the world, Mauna Loa is the largest volcano in the world which is 2,000 square miles. Mauna Loa is located on the…
On the 22nd of May, 1960, Chile experienced one of the largest earthquakes recorded to date. The earthquake struck 160km’s off the coast of Southern Chile parallel to the city of Valdivia at 7:11pm. The temblor was the cause of significant damage and loss of life in both Chile and distant Pacific coastal areas. It is believed that the earthquake had a magnitude of 9.5 following a series of foreshocks the previous day. The earthquake was responsible for extreme destruction within Chile and caused nearly half of the buildings in Valdivia to be rendered uninhabitable.…
The Control of Nature, by John McPhee, is a book about three different events in which humans were faced with the challenge to “control nature” in order to protect their homes and lives. The three chapters in the novel, “Atchafalaya”, “Cooling the Lava”, and “Los Angeles Against the Mountains” illustrate some of the Enduring Understandings of Earth Science, which include “Energy, from the Sun and form the Earth’s interior, drive all of the Earth’s cycles and processes.” , “Matter moves through Earth’s spheres in cyclical processes, over varying periods of time, and at different scales.”, and “Earth’s surfaces and processes are altered by human engineering.”. The first Enduring Understanding explains how all of the cycles and processes…
In 1947, Mount Hekla erupted caused some major damage. However,…
The first eruption, which happened 2.1 million years ago, was said to be 6,000 times the size of the Mount St. Helen’s eruption back in 1980. After the first eruption happened,…
On the west side of Italy, a six foot chamber of magma is building under Mt. Vesuvius. Mt. Vesuvius is a volcano that is still active to this day but, in 79 A.D. the volcano erupted wiping away the city of Pompeii and killing almost everyone in the city. The eruption killed over 16,000 people and it wiped away all the belongings of the people who did make it out alive. The eruption was a total surprise. No warning was given because the volcano eruption was completely unpredictable.…
Krakatoa erupted in 1883, killed many, affected climate worldwide, and may do it all again. Krakatoa affected many people all over the world, mostly in bad ways. A lot of people think that Krakatoa is in the past, but it’s still active and very dangerous. A lot of time and energy has gone into studying volcanoes like this. As you can probably guess, it's not the safest line of work.…
1. Introduction The Thera Catastrophe is a topic of debate for many scientists around the world. The eruption happened around 3500 years ago.…
75% of all volcanoes in the United States are located in Alaska making it the best and more resourceful laboratory for the scientist trying to better understand the true reason behind all the eruptions. Step number 1 is figuring out how giant volcanoes formed in what known as the Ring of Fire. The first volcano being investigated is Augustine which is better known as a stratovolcano; they are unique because they are shaped the type found all around the Ring of Fire. Over the years solidified lava flows gradually built up around the…
