Due to dispute and certain circumstances occurring in the workplace, some employees find this seniority policy as unacceptable and unfair as a result of Maude’s poor work behaviour. Looking back on equity theory, inequity tension is clearly evident in this type of situation as everyone feels as though they are under-rewarded. This means that the employees believe that their outcomes/input ration is lower than the comparison other’s ratio.1 This is revealed when Maude is described as inefficient when doing a certain task due to her inconsistent routinely work performance. Additionally, her tendency to volunteer to hand-carry medication to the floors to take “smoke breaks”, calling in sick multiply times and occasionally two days in succession when really she is healthy, and falling behind in filling her assigned carts, clearly shows that she is not qualified to take the position of intravenous medication (IV) technician. Nevertheless, Mr. Klein insists they “stick with the seniority policy”, when they are other qualified candidates at hand for the position.
