Matty grows up orphaned, disfigured, and thrown into a Catholic school where his teacher and classmates do not dare to even look his way. Still, he ends up taking a liking to his teacher, Mr. Pedigree, who is a known pederast. After the death of Mr. Pedigree's favorite student -- where Matty's sneaker was found at the scene outside the man's window -- Mr. Pedigree gets fired, arrested, and places the blame on Matty as he is escorted from the building. When Matty is questioned by a police officer asking what could have lead Mr. Pedigree to kill his classmate, Matty quickly replies, "Evil!" It seems to be a small detail, but his response exhibits the entire basis of Matty's character.
