The gentleman is sitting on a stone, his right hand is on the air pointing towards the woman, a nimbus is around his head, and a scroll is in his left hand. One woman is bowing and touching the man’s right foot with her hand. The second woman is almost bending towards the man sitting on the stone, and reaching for his hands. There three women in front of this man. One of them has her right hand on her mouth, the middle one has her left hand under her chin, and the last one has her left hand halfway raised and her mouth appears to be open. According to Mark, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome has gone to the tomb on first day of the week. “They entered the tomb, they saw a young man dresses in a white robe, sitting on the right side; and they were alarmed”. The Munich artist has portrayed this scene very well. One can clearly perceive the women in the Munich panel being in state of shock by looking at their hand

The medium used (oil) allowed the painter to make very realistic shades and colors. The figures and landscape in the painting also looked very fluid and real due to the use of the oil paint. The painting contains the Virgin Mary, the baby Jesus and his second cousin St. John the Baptist. The painting foreshadows the death of Christ on the cross. This point is displayed in the action of the painting where St. John is handing Jesus a small cross and Mary is looking upon it knowing what is to…

The angels symbolize Jesus as the only way to Heaven. As the blood ran from His face, the thunder roared the sky grew dark, and the earth trembled before Jesus died. Why would the earth react and tremble and the atmosphere be moved so violently right before Jesus died? A lot was happening in the spiritual realm while Jesus hang on the cross I believe the demons and devil pondered and murmured while they waited for Jesus spirit to release from his body then took Him to hell in our stead.…

All the figures pictured occupy space and have weight. As the piece moves backward toward where Christ is nailed to the cross, there is a definite recession of space. Van Eyck uses this receding background to denote depth, and it is only further enhanced by the intricately detailed, by tiny buildings in the back, and the atmospheric perspective employed on the even further receding landscape. The distraught bodies of the Mary’s engage the viewer’s interest in the foreground. As one looks at The Crucifixion’s contrasting piece, The Last Judgment, this occupation of natural space is seemingly lost.…

The foundations of the The Aeneid and the Gospel of Mark are men. In the context of the two literary texts, it is worthwhile to examine the women and their deployment in the Aeneid and the Gospel of Mark, for they figure importantly in the respective missions of Aeneas and Jesus. The women are in the lives of Aeneas pose obstacles, whereas the women in Mark supplement to the spreading of Jesus’s word. Vergil’s representation of women in The Aeneid as opposing figures against Aeneas, discredited by their own failure. Though the epic poem is centered around the aspirations and relationships among men, the divine figures of Juno and Dido elicit problematic issues for Aeneas.…

In Dante’s Purgatorio we find that the terraces form opposites from the circles of hell in at least two ways. First, Dante and Virgil are now traveling upwards rather than downwards as they did in hell. Second, in hell the offenses range from least to worst whereas here, in purgatory, the first terrace contains those who have committed the worst of the forgivable sins, pride. It may seem strange that pride is the worst, but as C.S. Lewis stated in Mere Christianity “the essential vice, the utmost evil, is Pride.…

One in particular is the Virgin and Child Enthroned, it was painted by two different artists, thirty years apart from each other. In the year 1280 the first Virgin and Child Enthroned was painted by Cenni Di Pepi, also known as “Cimabue.” (M. Stokstad, 536) The second Virgin and Child Enthroned was painted by Giotto Di Bondone in 1305-1310.…

Art is meant to capture the viewer’s attention and affect them on a deep level. Many times, it leads the audience to examine human beings at a rudimentary state. In Théodore Géricault’s painting, Raft of the Medusa, 1818-1819, Oil on canvas, the viewer does exactly that. In his painting, about 20 men are strewn on a makeshift raft from the remnants of their ship. Some are dead and some are franticly waving pieces of cloth in the air at a ship in the horizon.…

The Gospel of Matthew contains a number of verses that provide a conflicting yet intriguing insight to the status of women and the interactions that Jesus had with them. A consequence of these differing views is the uncertainty readers may have over the role of women and their influence in the rise of Christianity. Professor Rodney Stark’s essay on the role of women promotes the notion that women were major stakeholders in Christianity and acted as a catalyst to the religion’s rapid growth. Despite having references about Christian women with high status, the Gospel of Matthew emphasises more on the importance of their function in the Christian movement. Christianity had become a popular religion among Pagan females as a result of sacred texts…

Unfortunately, much of what we know about women has either been destroyed or their stories altered to diminish their reputation. Some women managed to be so great that their prominence in history could not be suppressed.…

In the New Testament, Junia, Pricilla, Phoebe, and Mary Magdalene were four females with leadership roles in the Jesus movement. These females were deaconesses, evangelists, educators, or preachers. The New Testament provides insight into the debate of female leadership and ordination during the early church movement; a debate that continues now. Certain Christian denominations today permit female ordination, while other denominations stand firm against female pastors; both use the New Testament to support their stance. When compared to the denominations that do ordain females, denominations that prohibit female ordination lack a fully developed theological foundation for their positions and ignore Scripture supporting female leadership and…
