Rabbits were introduced to Australia in the 18th
The first fleet was a group of 11 ships sent there by Great Britain. The people aboard
created the first European settlement in Australia. The rabbits they brought with them
were bred as food animals.
By 1827, the rabbit population was in the thousands. These rabbits though were
contained and were not wild. It soon became common to farm rabbits similarly to how
chickens were farmed in the early America’s. Rabbits didn’t become a problem until
1859 when a man named Thomas Austin asked his nephew William Austin, who was
