Improved Essays
We all have passions. We use determination to achieve our goals regarding those passions. Determination allows a student, athlete, or anyone to achieve far-fetched goals in everyday life. It requires hard work, dedication, and allowing the goal to take a huge deal of time. Some people have more motivation than others to reach these goals, but I feel that determination shows one’s desire to get where they want to go in life. Talking to Matthew McClintock, I learned that he possesses multiple qualities and puts forth enormous amounts of effort in his everyday life in order to achieve his goals. Many immediately think of Michael Jordan, and have asked how Jordan was so good. In the chapter “The Matthew Effect”, Malcolm Gladwell argues how it is not only skill that results in being successful, but that it is the time when you were born, saying that being born in the first six months of the year gives more time to mature as well as learn alongside those who are older, creating a greater chance of success. Throughout “The Matthew Effect”, Malcolm Gladwell effectively uses, and relies on, experimental evidence and inductive reasoning to support his claim that…

Coaching youth basketball has given me an opportunity to help young kids learn to love basketball. In Coach Rick’s after school basketball program we stress positivity, teamwork, and inclusion rather than the success of the individual. Mistakes are encouraged, not looked down upon. Helping kids with difficult attitudes become team-oriented and positive carries beyond the basketball court. Coaching in the same program that I played in has helped shape my attitude towards everything: positivity, learning from failure, and bringing up those less talented than others.…

Determination is imperative in life. Without determination, society would cease to advance. In the movie The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring by Peter Jackson, Jackson shows the significance of determination when Gandalf makes Frodo take the ring instead of Gandalf destroying it himself, when Gandalf allows Frodo to make choices about what path the Fellowship takes to get to Mount Doom, and when Gandalf gives his life to protect the Fellowship. At the beginning of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, Frodo inherits The One Ring to Rule Them All. Frodo tries to pass the ring off to Gandalf to destroy it, but Gandalf knows that the ring will corrupt him so Gandalf makes Frodo take the Ring.…

People are driven to have an interest in something at one point, and even with motivation, determination still has it’s role to play in every scenario. Determination stems from an idea inspired from one’s dreams and desires. When Maria Wrote a letter to Malvolio in Olivia’s hand writing, Maria had put herself at a risk of someone finding out about the prank, but it was the determination that kept the prank alive. Maria could’ve easily messed up the handwriting if she wasn’t careful enough, but Maria kept going through with her plan even after Malvolio was put in a cellar and sending the fool dressed up as Sir Topas. The determination it takes to reach the climax of a dream or desire is quite great, but it’s required in order to achieve whatever you have in…

Education today, in my opinion, is not doing what it should be doing to ensure that America is actually living up to what it is known for...the land of opportunities. I believe that education should be about an empowering experience that helps students discover their passions, fosters their critical thinking skills, promotes an environment that accepts diversity, and encourages students to apply to skills to the outside world. This should be he purpose of American public schooling because it will help society adapt to changing times and encourage the growth of a well-rounded, modern, and accepting culture which in the long run help foster peace and equality. I am sure that there are many schools in America that try and foster all of things,…
