Matthew 5-7 Leadership

Successful leaders are not only born with natural skills to lead and encourage their team members, they also have the knowledge that they need to continue to develop skills that they may be lacking and strengthen skills they already have. The Bible is a great source of insights for individuals to learn how they can be great leaders. The scriptures within Matthew 5-7 contain many impactful skills that when practiced will build successful leaders who motivate, empower and build others. Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount begins in Matthew 5 with the Beatitudes. Matthew 5:3, “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven” (NIV). The leader who is poor is spirit is not full of pride. Pride makes it easy for us to not focus our worship …show more content…
A merciful leader will first examine the heart of an employee. The leader works with the team mate to help correct the wrong and learn from their mistakes (Winston, Tucker, 2011). In mercy the leader will be able to help work through mistakes and empower their team members to take risks (Ebner, 2012).
Matthew 5:8, “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God” (NIV). A leader who is pure in heart leads while serving. They step into team member roles and lead from the bottom up (Enber, 2012). Jesus demonstrated his purity in heart as a leader in John 13 where he took the place of the lowest servant and washed all of his disciple’s feet. Another example would be as simple as the leader ordering and picking up a meal for all of his team members during an intense work session. Matthew 5:9, “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God” (NIV). Peacemakers are mediators who promote peaceful resolution of conflict and seeks out true harmony through team members (Eber, 2012). Peacemakers also work hard to not allow conflicts to fester and explode. They are also careful when engaging each other in conflict, Matthew 7:1, “Do not judge, or you too will be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you” (NIV). In, Matthew 5:24, Jesus teaches us to make peace with our family, friends and colleagues. “Peace

Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me” (NIV). Leaders endure persecution for the sake of a higher calling. Living in the hope received through the knowledge of salvation through Jesus Christ creates the opportunity for a leader to endure persecution and grow in faith, hope and love (Ebner, 2012). Leaders are not filled with vengeance for those who come up against them. Matthew 5:44, “But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be children of your Father in heaven” (NIV). In this fallen world praying for your enemies and peacefully enduring persecution is the lesser walked path, but one that is blessed by God. Matthew 7: 13-14, “Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it”

Scripture is full of different qualities that a leader should possess but there are a few in particular that stick out. A Christian leader is someone who is imitable and who's actions deserve to be imitated. In 1 Corinthians 4:16 it states, "Therefore I urge you to imitate me," (New International Version 1984) and this leads you to believe that a leader should always live an imitable life. Christian leaders also have integrity. They can be trusted and expected to be honest.…

If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also” (Matthew 5:38-39). They would say that Jesus is telling us that violence is never the answer even if someone has wronged you. Another Biblical reason for pacifism comes later in the Sermon of the Mount when Christ states, “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you” (Matthew 5:43-44). The concept of “virtue” is a subject many philosophical and religious figures have contributed their ideas to. The perceptions of what it means to be virtuous and how to attain virtue varies from philosophy to philosophy. Two of the most well-known figures that have laid forth their ideas on moral virtue are the Greek philosopher Aristotle and the Christian deity Jesus Christ. Though these two leaders are famous for their dissertations concerning virtue, their principles differ greatly. In Jesus’ The Sermon on the Mount, he presents his teachings concerning how to be a virtuous individual in a series of values that even the poorest and humblest people can strive for.…

Compare & Contrast Leadership Styles In our text, Leadership is defined as “An area of study marked by the examination of the behaviors of others” (p.378). After reading about the three styles of leadership which are transformational, transactional, and servant leadership, I instantly thought about a scripture which says “Be shepherds of God’s flock that is under your care, watching over them—not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be; not pursuing dishonest gain, but eager to serve; not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock” (1 Peter 5:2-3, New International Version). Before I start uncovering the similarities between theses three leadership styles, I’m going begin by defining…

The outcome of these situations will either sharpen the skill set of the leader as iron is sharpened by other iron, or the leader will lose the trust of followers due to his or her demonstrated ineffectiveness. Leaders must prepare themselves for the contact sport of leadership and exhibit unwavering character as they manage situations and strive to be change agents in the modern business world. It is crucial for individuals who seek a leadership position to understand that everything will not operate as planned.…

Not discounting the work of the Holy Spirit, one must understand that Paul demonstrated authenticity in his leadership style. George (2003) pointed out that, Authentic leaders demonstrate five basic characteristics: (1) They under- stand their purpose, (2) they have strong values about the right thing to do, (3) they establish trusting relationships with others, (4) they demonstrate self-discipline and act on their values, and (5) they are passionate about their mission (i.e., act from their heart) (as cited by Northouse, 2013,…
