Successful leaders are not only born with natural skills to lead and encourage their team members, they also have the knowledge that they need to continue to develop skills that they may be lacking and strengthen skills they already have. The Bible is a great source of insights for individuals to learn how they can be great leaders. The scriptures within Matthew 5-7 contain many impactful skills that when practiced will build successful leaders who motivate, empower and build others. Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount begins in Matthew 5 with the Beatitudes. Matthew 5:3, “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven” (NIV). A merciful leader will first examine the heart of an employee. The leader works with the team mate to help correct the wrong and learn from their mistakes (Winston, Tucker, 2011). In mercy the leader will be able to help work through mistakes and empower their team members to take risks (Ebner, 2012).
Matthew 5:8, “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God” (NIV). A leader who is pure in heart leads while serving. They step into team member roles and lead from the bottom up (Enber, 2012). Jesus demonstrated his purity in heart as a leader in John 13 where he took the place of the lowest servant and washed all of his disciple’s feet. Another example would be as simple as the leader ordering and picking up a meal for all of his team members during an intense work session. Matthew 5:9, “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God” (NIV). Peacemakers are mediators who promote peaceful resolution of conflict and seeks out true harmony through team members (Eber, 2012). Peacemakers also work hard to not allow conflicts to fester and explode. They are also careful when engaging each other in conflict, Matthew 7:1, “Do not judge, or you too will be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you” (NIV). Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me” (NIV). Leaders endure persecution for the sake of a higher calling. Living in the hope received through the knowledge of salvation through Jesus Christ creates the opportunity for a leader to endure persecution and grow in faith, hope and love (Ebner, 2012). Leaders are not filled with vengeance for those who come up against them. Matthew 5:44, “But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be children of your Father in heaven” (NIV). In this fallen world praying for your enemies and peacefully enduring persecution is the lesser walked path, but one that is blessed by God. Matthew 7: 13-14, “Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it”
