This essay will explain the uses of mattes, alpha channels, and masks, while defining what they are and demonstrating a scenario wherein they work together during compositing.

Now that we understand the terms we can see how they are used in compositing. When Iron man flies across the New York sky, these techniques are used to make it look realistic. I have created this exact picture to demonstrate how the techniques are used together.
The process I used:
I looked at the RGB channels within the Iron Man picture and created an alpha channel by using the green channel to select Iron Man and make the rest transparent. I then clicked the mask button and it used my Alpha channel to create a mask. So I placed the mask of Iron Man over the New York skyline. I also used a simple lighting effect to match the lighting in both pictures. This is compositing. Doing this five minute project I’ve used: Masking, Alpha Channels, and Mattes to create a composite.
This demonstrates how they can work together and the process in which they do when creating a still image. In film it’s more complicated, as the images are moving. Even so, the general idea is the same.

Man with a Movie Camera, a film from 1929 directed by Dziga Vertov, is a film unlike any contemporary movie we would see today that may hold more significance than most modern blockbusters from Hollywood. This film takes place over the course of one day, and presents how extraordinary everyday life can be. Vertov uses no actors and tells no story in this film. Instead, he focuses on the technology of the camera he is using to film, and shows his audience what the kino-eye sees and what really goes into making a move. Often times iconic scenes in a movie will have amazing music, sound effects and vocals to tie the whole scene together, and with all of these, visuals are not really needed, they will only give a crystal clear image of what the director has already portrayed with sound. One example could be the shower scene in Psycho; if you turn off the screen and only listen to the sound; an almost crystal clear visual is made because you can hear what is actually going on. Another perfect example is the movie Jaws (1975). The iconic scene in the movie is when Brody finally kills the beast; with the music, the sound effects and the vocals combined, a feeling of suspense becomes apparent with the audience, as well as that of a sigh of relief once Bruce is…

Direct Cinema, or Cinéma Vérité, presents somewhat of a constant and ongoing paradox as to what a film’s criteria should be. Some say Direct Cinema is a specific style of filmmaking and others will say the complete opposite. This is what makes the genre so interesting because there doesn’t seem to be a definitive answer as to what makes something strictly a Direct Cinema film. Is it something that attempts to be unbiased by showing individual moments that aren’t affected by the camera, or is it something that encapsulates a specific emotion in a specific time and place with as little bias as possible?…
