Schools have a variety of responsibilities beyond just teaching a student how to solve a mathematical equation. School should be teaching their students how to deal with the daily problems and struggles that life throws at you. Educators should help students to understand how to make moral choices and how to approach social issues. School is a very social environment, filled with positive and negative aspects. This kind of environment is a great opportunity for schools to step up and teach teenagers how to make the right choices. With the daily choices teenagers are accustomed to, it is hard for them to know which path to take. Since the hormones in adolescents are ten times more sensitive than that of adults, it increases that chance of a teenager to make the wrong choice. Her parents didn't really care for her well-being and offered her no advice for her problems. When she was old enough to attend school, her wonderful teacher, Miss Honey, was her light in the world. She taught Matilda how to do more than just read and write. She help her make decisions that would be beneficial to her in the long run. Since her parents were reluctant in supplying her with the tools she needed to make such moral decisions, her teacher stepped up and helped her. Schools often discipline bad behavior but never reward good behavior. Bullying in school is a problem. It is also the number one thing that students get in trouble for. When kids are at home, their parents can teach them that violence is never the answer and punish them when they do become violent. However, at school, parents can't be there to inform their kids to make moral choices. This is why the schools should perform their duties as mentors and help these students.
