The quote "Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn" by Benjamin Franklin tells me that by just telling me without showing me will not let me learn anything. I agree with this quote because when a teacher or someone tells me something about an assignment or homework I will eventually forget about it but if some one teach it to me step by step and I write it down will let me remember. By writing down the notes that the teachers wrote down step by step and write it my own understanding will make me understand more about the lesson because who understands my writing more than myself.…
David Hammer, the author of Two Approaches to Learning Physics, discusses how two students’ learning styles affect their capability of fully understanding physics. As one might already know, everyone has different methods of learning. Some learn visually, while others need to hear things to learn well. But what is the best way to learn?…
Entering into unit two of the Math 1201 course, I find that the concepts in the reading crystallize in my mind after an average of two to three readings. Failing to employ proper use of fundamental mathematical concepts appears to be the major bane that deters my ability to comprehend the material any faster. For example, neglecting to execute operations in the proper sequence caused me initial problems when converting from the general quadratic form to the standard form, specifically completing the square. Furthermore, my neglect resulted in personal doubt in my ability to perform the operation as I would arrive at an answer different than the solution contained within the textbook. Realizing the error in my conversions was a result in my…
I like studying from a study group. That is a good way to help me know what important information I missed, and got the clear answer through discuss with others in the group. My efficient study strategies are using notes, and reviewing important class materials. That can help me to understand and memorize.…
This semester I had an opportunity to volunteer in the Math Science Upward Bound thanks to Miss. Wendy Conarro. This program helped students strengthen their math and science skills. I worked with Miss. Conarro who was in charge of science project. The students would come to the class and decide their own project which goes along with their career plans.…
Pre-Teaching Another common general practice that teachers can use to help students with learning disabilities is called pre-teaching. Munk, Gibb, and Caldarella (2010) define pre-teaching as “the advance introduction of information that prepares students for upcoming instruction” (as cited in Berg and Wehby, p. 15). The introduction of difficult concepts and vocabulary can have a significant impact on a student’s progress understanding of new course material. Pre-teaching does not simply have to address vocabulary or concepts for an upcoming lecture. Instead, pre-teaching can be used to review previous concepts learned from a previous section.…
Annotated Bibliography 1. (n.d.). School-wide strategies for managing mathematics. Intervention Central, Retrieved from http://www.interventioncentral.org/academic-interventions/math/school-wide-strategies-managing-mathematics In this article the importance of children’s development of number sense, understanding of how number concepts work and the relationships between numbers is discussed along with thes and order of operations and then by upper middle school they begin to master word problems.…
Response Paper: Ch. 2 “Finding Our Way-The Experience of Education” In the second chapter of the book, Why School? Reclaiming Education for All of Us, Mike Rose queries that we can learn from surroundings and we can make our lives spontaneously, so why we have to pay more attention to experience of education in the schoolhouse. His main point is the experience of education determines the way students perceive schooling, how to integrate into our lives and how to define ourselves.…
Today, many adults view word problems as the least favorite aspect of math problems; however, that may all change in the future due to today’s students receiving thorough instruction on word problems through the use of teachers using the Common Core Initiative. In order for students to appreciate word problems they must first understand what the problem is asking them solve and they must also understand the information that the word problem has given them. The eight mathematical practices teach students to understand math problems and to analyze the problems. The first step in helping students with math is to show them how to think mathematically.…
In this chapter it mainly explains metacognitive, learning strategies, problem solving, and teaching to transfer. The chapter begins by explaining the three metacognitive skills that are used to help with thinking and learning. The skills are planning, evaluating, and monitoring. Planning can help with strategies on how to do something and how to begin an assignment. The next skill, monitoring, helps with know what progress you are at on an assignment.…
Any subject in mathematics requires paying attention and note taking, but Algebra 2 requires a special type of attention. Notes should be very detailed and comprehensive. They should reflect everything all the effort the teacher puts into writing the lesson on the board. Furthermore, the notes should have all of the examples and vocab written upon the white board. The comprehensive job of taking notes may not be appealing to all, but it is so worth it…
Practitioners can support children’s mathematical development in several ways. Emergent mathematics starts from birth and emerges through play. Maths is used in our everyday lives for example, keeping track of time, shopping, routines or cooking. It's important that children have the opportunity to use resources and have experiences that support emergent mathematics. Practitioners should demonstrate an interest in mathematics so children have a positive view of maths and feel capable of it.…
One of the key attributes for a successful nursing career is to have adequate numeracy skills. I believe it is very important for nurses and nursing student to learn how to correctly measure drug dosages for the safe administration of medication to patients. Basic drug calculations include IV rates, measuring drug dosages, and measurement by weight etc. The research done by C. Deans (2005) on the rising medication error among Registered Nurses details the types, causes and the effects of these errors. The author also highlights the serosity of medication errors as it can “lead to devastating consequences for the patient and for the nurse’s career”…
Recent studies have shown that writing notes by hand is more effective than typing notes on a computer. Writing by hand helps students remember the material learned in class. Using too much technology affects important life skills and the way students learn. Researchers have studied the effects of writing notes and typing notes. Even though taking notes on a computer helps with organization and is much faster than handwritten notes, the best option is to write notes by hand.…
As a teacher, my belief is that students be taught the importance of mathematics in the daily life. I also stand firm that students should also be taught important life lessons that relate to how to succeed and prepare for the future. I think that it is inevitable that students be taught basic curriculum in mathematics. I agree that concepts of Algebra, Geometry, and Statistics be taught but I also think that students should be taught mathematics that deals with finances earlier then the college level. Everyone I let know says I am crazy for going into Math education.…
