THREADED DISCUSSION PROBLEMS – Fractions, Decimals & Percents – WEEK # 1

1) Convert percentage 4.0005 % to decimal. = .040005 (1)

Solution: Move the decimal 2 places to the left and drop the percent sign. Since there is only one number to the left you need to add a “0”.

2) Convert percentage 400.05 % to an improper and a mixed fraction. = 8,001/2,000 and 4 1/ 2,000 ((1 pt each)

Solution: Move the decimal 2 places to the left and drop the percent sign (4.0005). Place this number over 4 zeros (the number of places to the right of the decimal in the numerator). Precede it with a “1” (.0005/10,000) NOTE: The “4” is not included here but brought back when the final
4) Evaluate 3/5 x 20/25 and simplify. ( 1 pt)

Solution:

3 x 4 = 12 Please note that I reduced the 20/25 down to 4/5 and then proceeded 5 5 25 to multiply across, 3 x 4 and then 5 x 5 to get the final answer. (1 pt)

5) Evaluate 2 3/4 + 1 1/2 and simplify. Solution:

First I converted each mixed number to an improper fraction...thus I would get

11 + 3, Then determined the common denominator, that is the smallest number that 4 2 both existing denominators(4,2) could divide into equally. That would be (4) Thus you now have the following:

11 + 6 = 17 or 4 1/4 (1 pt) 4 4

6) Multiplication of signed numbers.

a) (+2)(+2) = 4 (.34) b) (+2)(-2) = - 4 (.34) c) (-2)(-2) = 4 (.34)

7) Division of signed numbers.

d) +2/+2 = 1 (.34) e) +2/-2 = - 1 (.34) f) -2/-2 = 1 (.34)

g) (-10) + (-20) = - 30 .5 for each part) h) (+10) + (-20) = - 10 .5 for each part)
