Personal Narrative: My Job Outlook For High School Teachers

During a high school math class I attended, a teacher of mine was explaining a fairly difficult subject, all that was on my mind was how I would teach the class instead. After the lecture ended I started thinking more about it and concluded that I do that for nearly all of my classes. I constantly think about how I would respond to questions, how I would grade, and how the class would be structured if I was in the math teacher’s shoes. I have decided to become a secondary math teacher, but I would like to know the job outlook for high school teachers. My first source regarding the job outlook for teachers was a short video. The video, titled “Teacher Shortage Continues to Grow in Wisconsin,” was about a lack of teachers in the state of Wisconsin. One topic on educators that the video discussed is that in the last six years, thirty percent less university students in Wisconsin are going into the field of education (Crest). While less students are becoming teachers, more teachers are retiring (Crest). Another issue brought to light is that Wisconsin teachers are making considerably less money than neighboring states (Crest). The article is called “High School Teachers.” The article lists a growth rate of around the median occupation at an anticipated six percent increase in jobs for high school teachers (“High”). The article describes that many schools in the U.S. are having trouble finding educators trained and licensed in specific subjects (“High”). A concern that the article gives way to is that the amount of high school teachers needed can be determined by the status of a budget in an area (“High”).
