I know that may sound surprising to hear but civil engineers use math to make sure houses and apartments are structural fit for residents to reside in. That means someone like myself who is aspiring to be an civil engineer would have to use a lot of math. Fourtnely for me math is my favorite subject. In school I never really had a terrible time with math. I always enjoyed learning math, because I felt it was the only subject in school, that actually required for me to use my brain at a critical level. So far in my three years of high school I have completed math classes such as: Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2/Trig, AP Stat, and Ap Calc. So in the discussion of whether or not math should be requirement for high school students, the answer to that question should be yes. Imagine living in a word where no one knows how to count, everyone would just be lost. Our whole world revolves around math. That's why it is very important every high school student learn how to do math. Why do so many people hate math? One may say that so many people hate math, because in math not everything is so

Is Algebra Worth the Work? Recently, I came across an editorial in the New York Times debating the reasoning behind requiring higher-level algebra in high school and college. Written by Andrew Hacker, a teacher at City University in New York since 1971, the article suggests that colleges and high schools shouldn’t actually require algebra in their everyday classes. On a personal note, I couldn’t agree more.…

A problem that Lockhart identifies about mathematics is that is is not being treated as an art. Modern mathematics is basically memorizing formulas, algorithms, and definitions. People need to see that, “ Mathematics is viewed by the culture as some sort of tool for science and technology. Everyone knows that poetry and music are for pure enjoyment and for uplifting and enrnoblingthe human spirit, but no, math is important.” (Lockhart 32) Poetry and music are an art and treated as a type of art, but mathematics is an art and is not being treated as an art.…

No it should not be taught because kids get taught this useless information and when they get into the real world they have no clue what to do like pay taxes or get a mortgage if they could afford it but the use their minds math that won't even help them and most of the time they are struggling in algebra instead i believe that when you get out of high school you can go to college and take classes for algebra if you choose instead of it taking up space for teachers to show their students on stuff that will really apply to the real world will this help In my opinion Absolutely and there are hundreds of thousands hgh school kids for this exact reason algebra is just too hard and articles that i have read said if we don't teach the young generation how to pay mortgages and taxes and pay bills then the future of this world is gonna be a living mess it will probably look like a real life version of the walking dead (except The zombies) But there are also bad sides to this for instance the grade standards will be lower which will be a problem because it competes in the global economy algebra is also needed for science courses such as physics chemistry and biology and algebra has helped many student attain successful careers in mechanics and other things that require that level of math but that still…

One aspect thought I had about teaching that I thought I knew about was how math is taught school. While I was in school, I only took the required amount of math that I needed. One of the best parts of my school system was that they incorporated accelerated math. I was able to go at my own pace, and retake quizzes that I needed to. It dawned on me rather quickly, that the system might work for everyone.…

Mathematician Lament Paul Lockhart wrote a paper criticizing the current model for mathematic education and how it is inevitably failing to actually teach students math. He states that math should actually be considered a part of the arts (Paul Lockhart pg.3), the reason that students not only lack a sense of interest but an inability to properly learn math is because it isn 't treated as an art. The current practice of giving students overly complicated processes to learn math when in actuality they will use little to none of them in their lives in highly impractical and "destroys curiosity" (Lockhart, Pg.2). He believes that if students were taught math through examples pertaining to actual life use they would not only understand the…
