Abstract
This research paper is on the topic of math in the movie Hidden Figures. In Hidden Figures, Katherine Johnson is a single, African-American female during the 1960s. She is everything a person does not want to be during this time. However, she helped solve the calculations to send man into space. One of the main points is describing the mathematical method, Euler’s Method, NASA and Johnson used to launch America into space and back. The second main point is how math is able to unite people despite differences. This movie is more than just entertainment. It goes beyond by describing how math can break boundaries and unite very diversified people. Math is about the ability to solve problems correctly, not the places you come from or how

Katherine Johnson was not the ideal person to solve these difficult equations and problems due to her physical appearance and background, yet there was no other mind better suited. During this time, females, black people, and single parents were all frowned upon, and Johnson was all three of these. When situations are dire, these judgements fade and resolutions are reached. When no one could figure out how to get the space capsule back to Earth, Johnson was called upon. At that desperate point, numbers were all that matter. These numbers “do not care about one’s gender. They do not care about one’s creed. They do not care about the color of one’s skin. They can be used by anyone who cares to learn their ways,” and this is what is so special about math (Garber, 2017). In the midst of trouble, people forget their differences and work together to find solutions for the greater good of the people. Hidden Figures is “about winning battles as a result of common interests even as your adversaries have trouble seeing you as a person who is just like them” (Garber, 2017). Despite outside appearances, everyone is the same, and math shows this. It brings people together because it does not discriminate nor …show more content…
We should be people who judge character rather than looks. We should be able to look past differences and become unified. We should be the kind of people to reflect on our decisions and what they mean for other people. In this movie, math is what does all of these things. Math can be looked at as just numbers, symbols, and equations, but it is much deeper than that. It binds the world together despite culture, ethnicity, race, gender, and relationships. Behind everything, we are all just people trying to get through life one step at a time together, and Hidden Figures reminds us that math can help us achieve

I enjoyed reading the book Hidden Figures because it taught me about how women of colour were treated back in the olden days. The book was fantastic, it unlocked our deep feelings and thoughts we have of our future about our jobs and dreams. Hidden Figures shows us to never give up and neither underestimate people, especially women. I will always remember that even people didn’t take them seriously at first, Katherine, Marry and Dorothee were the ones who changed NASA’s history. One thing I liked about the book was, how the characters in the book wanted to change their lives and instead changed the history.…

While I found the movie “Hidden Figures” very entertaining and informative I couldn’t help but find this movie had a couple of misconceptions that didn’t look right. One example being the segregation within NASA. I found it was rather comical in the movie as NASA purposely crippled themselves by trying to keep many bright African-Americans minds that showed nothing but promise anyway from the project. It seemed rather foolish to do this especially during space race with the Soviet Union as America was falling behind and were in desperate need to have an edge on Russia. Apparently from the movie the only people who actually wanted to make history where the three main characters Kathrine, Dorothy, and Mary as they stopped at nothing to overcome…

Appropriately specific brief summary of MCK Test results. It was during week three that I completed the Mathematical Content Knowledge (MCK) test for the purposes of determining my level of understanding relating to certain mathematical concepts, such as multiplication, division, addition, and place value (Curtin, 2014). Before starting, I felt overly confident in my ability to successfully answer all the questions within the quiz, however, it was not until I skimmed through the questions that I began to think otherwise. The beliefs in myself concerning mathematics is one of duality: I know that I am more than capable of solving complex questions, yet I am also conscious of my lacking motivation behind the subject itself which stems from…
