During my sophomore year, I heard about elections for the president of National Math Honor Society, or NMHS. I was excited as I saw this as the opportunity I had to instill a love of math for my fellow high school peers. Since I had been at the top of my math classes during high school, I anticipated an easy triumph for me, so I imprudently stood idle while my opponents campaigned. Unfortunately, after the voting by my fellow students, I learned I had lost to a junior.
I shrank down in my seat and tears formed in my eye, showing my humiliation. As my mom drove me home, my brain turned on me, calling me “hopeless”. Running to my room, I shut the door, put on music, and laid in my bed.
