FML has been constructed to assist employees in managing their work and family responsibilities by allowing them to take reasonable unpaid leave for certain family and medical conditions. FML seeks to promote equal employment opportunities for both men and women and an employer must allow the employee to return to work to the same position they had. Although, FML does not emphasize paternity leave for fathers, society oversees men has the bread winners of the household and women as the caregivers. With time society and its perspective on this topic has changed. Now a day roles of women being solely the caregivers has changed. There are many men that have chosen to be stay-at-home fathers and take that role that women would usually endure. There are many instances where men have overcome the statistics and the social stigma. In the article “Policies to Assist Parents with Young Children” by Christopher J. Ruhm, Government endorses parental leave eligibility to assist parents with the transition and the high demands of work and family life. It should be a normal practice for a father and for a mother to have the ability and privileged to care after a child. The director of The Fatherhood Project at the Families and Work Institute in New York, stated that, “What they’re taking is an average of five days, but they’re not utilizing the policy. They’re negotiating directly with their boss”(family education). Father should have the possibilities, such as women, to a certain degree, on taking or requested from the organization that you belong to, a father should have the ability to attend, care and take days off to be with their family. If an organization declines or refuses such a request from a father to be, it may be considered it a form of discrimination. Working fathers should have some sort of FMLA benefits like mothers do.
