Materialism refers to a collection of personality traits. The contemporary world is full of people who possess materialistic trait. They have a belief that owning and acquisition of the right properties is the vital ingredients of happiness. These people think that success is judged by the things individual possesses. In the book Feed by M.T. Anderson, the film The Truman Show by Peter Weir, and the articles “We Are What We Consume” by Ian Zimmerman and “Consumerism and its Discontents” by Tori DeAngelis, they show materialism in a society and how the consequences of pursuing materialistic lifestyle are the inability to reach the state of happiness in one’s life. In a materialism-driven society, people base their self worth on what they own and are able to buy which results in a restriction of freedom and are unhappy.
In the book Feed, the main character Titus is extremely materialistic; his life is dominated by shopping and what he possesses. Titus ' materialistic attitude comes when he is angry and cut off from his parents: all it takes for his parents to make him content again is them agreeing to buy him an upcar which is flying car. His obsession with his upcar goes on to act as a symbol of his wealth and materialistic attitude. This materialistic attitude is caused by the constant advertising and images projected by the corporations and media in their feed.
