This time I decided to interview someone in a job that doesn’t need a 4 year degree. Holli Raymond is an old friend of mine and has worked as a massage therapist before she became a mom but still has a small business for close friends and family. Holli’s experience is mainly in a spa where she worked as a massage therapist as well as the assistant manager of the spa. She graduated from Utah College of Massage Therapy in 2006. The official name of her position is a licensed massage therapist. She had always wanted to be a massage therapist even in high school but it took her six years to be in a place where she could financially afford massage school. She really loves giving massages and helping people but it is difficult to have a steady income as a massage therapist. When the economy tanks or time are rough financially people don’t really make massages a priority. They treat it like a luxury and don’t want to pay for one or can’t afford it. There are a lot of different things that she could have pursued and been very successful and she probably would choose a different path if she could do it over again. Many people own a small business or spa, you could work at a spa as an employee, or you can do out-call massage work where you travel to people’s home to give massages. The type of work you pick has a big influence on how much you get paid. If you did really well in school and got A’s you can charge more than a B student. If you work in a spa they take 65% of your income but if you own your own spa you get all the money expect for taxes. She pointed out that if you work on a cruise ship then you don’t really have anywhere to spend your money to you get to save a lot more compared to living in a
